Luis Eduardo Machado Gallegos Offers Groundbreaking Perspective at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana de Colombia Panel on Corporate Self-Regulation in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Bogotá, Colombia – August 1, 2025 – On Wednesday, July 30, Dentons, the world’s largest law firm, through its Colombian office Dentons Cárdenas & Cárdenas, convened a high-level panel discussion under the title “Lessons on the Use of AI for Companies: Challenges and Keys to Corporate Self-Regulation.” The event brought together prominent figures from the legal, corporate, and tech sectors to address the fast-evolving intersection between artificial intelligence (AI), law, and corporate governance. The conversation, held both in person at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá and livestreamed to a wide audience, quickly became a reference point for responsible AI strategy in Latin America.

Among the speakers, Luis Eduardo Machado Gallegos—a renowned international expert in AI law, regulatory frameworks, and corporate digital ethics—offered what many attendees described as some of the most insightful and thought-provoking contributions of the event.

Machado’s intervention stood out for its clarity, depth, and urgency, focusing on the growing responsibility of companies to self-regulate AI systems in the absence of robust regional legislative frameworks. He emphasized that while legal reform is underway in many jurisdictions, the pace of technological advancement demands that companies act proactively to define internal AI governance strategies, particularly in areas such as algorithmic transparency, bias mitigation, and data protection.

“…Corporate self-regulation is no longer optional—it is a strategic imperative,” Machado stated during the discussion. “Companies that embed ethical principles into their AI development and deployment processes will be more resilient, more trusted, and better positioned to adapt to the regulatory landscape that is rapidly forming…”

Drawing from comparative global examples and real-world corporate case studies, Machado outlined a set of actionable principles for businesses, including the importance of:

  • Establishing internal AI ethics committees or governance boards
  • Implementing explainability standards for machine learning systems
  • Conducting algorithmic impact assessments in high-risk use cases
  • Aligning AI practices with international guidelines, such as those from the OECD, UNESCO, and the EU AI Act
  • Training internal legal and compliance teams to interpret AI-related risk

Alongside Gina Fonseca Bustos from Avianca and Fernando Victoria Peña from TP, Machado contributed to a rich, interdisciplinary dialogue moderated by leaders at Dentons, sparking significant interest from the audience, who posed questions ranging from regulatory harmonization to AI liability and due diligence obligations under future legislation.

The event also served as a platform for exploring the Colombian and regional context, where businesses are increasingly deploying AI across sectors such as finance, health, logistics, and communications, often without clear legal precedents or policy frameworks in place. Machado’s call for anticipatory governance and industry-wide collaboration resonated with legal professionals, entrepreneurs, and regulators in attendance.

The panel was made possible thanks to the initiative and organizational leadership of Juanita Acosta, Isabella Gutiérrez Chinchilla, and the wider team at Dentons Cárdenas & Cárdenas, whose ongoing commitment to fostering dialogue on law and technology has positioned the firm as a regional thought leader in responsible innovation.
