Sources close to WFAN reveal that John Sterling, the iconic voice behind the Yankees for over three decades, is contemplating a return to the commentary booth for the New York Yankees’ playoff games.
John Sterling, aged 86, retired earlier in April after a distinguished 36-year career with the Yankees, marked by a celebratory retirement ceremony. His position was subsequently filled by commentators Rickie Ricardo, Justin Shackil, and Emmanuel Berbari.
This week saw Sterling briefly reunite with Suzyn Waldman in the Yankees’ commentary booth, where they called several innings together. Discussions about his potential return for the postseason are set to take place soon with Chris Oliviero, President of Audacy New York, although Oliviero has not yet made a formal invitation.
Sterling hinted at his openness to the idea, stating, “The decision is up to them. It would be considerate to extend the invitation, although I empathize with the current commentators who have been covering the games all year.”
Oliviero has not commented on these discussions.
Sterling’s iconic calls have left a lasting impact, prompting fellow broadcasters to honor him by mimicking his signature phrases during games. While there’s a possibility for Sterling to cover only home games during the playoffs, sources suggest he might need to commit to both home and away games. Travel, a significant factor in his initial retirement decision, appears less daunting with the postseason’s structured schedule. Sterling mentioned that the playoff timetable would facilitate his participation.
If he decides to return, Sterling might also commentate a few regular-season games to readjust to the booth.
Post-playoffs, Sterling plans to resume his retirement. Meanwhile, the Yankees and WFAN are considering Ricardo, Shackil, and Berbari for the permanent role and are conducting a nationwide search to find the best fit.
In a related development, FS1 “Breakfast Ball” co-host Craig Carton was recently invited by the Yankees and WFAN to call games. While not a contender for a full-time position, his performance was well-received, and there’s potential for future collaboration, although his commitments with “Breakfast Ball” starting in September make his availability this season unlikely.
